A History of GB3NN
GB3NN was originaly built by Noel G8GTZ using ex-commercial PYE PF460 units converted to 70cms uhf
around the same time as GB3NR late 1970`s early 1980`s. It`s keeper / owner-operators at the time were i belive
Tim Thirst (G4CTT) & Gordon Higgins (G3PXK).
GB3NN (RB2) was located on a communication tower at the Bacton Gas Terminal site on the north norfolk coast and was
easily accessed with 1 watt from Fakenham by G6JVF (G0FVF) on a handheld in regular QSO`S with (now silient key) Bill G8KZP & many other Ham`s in Wells-Next-Sea. Later it was located on a water tower at kelling heath near Sheringham, here it didnt enjoy the best of use and suffered badly on its coverage due to shielding of surrounding tree`s.
On 7th march 1984 a meeting was held in the upper floor room of the Shipwright`s Arm`s public house Wells-next-sea, & a new Repeater Group was formed, "GB3 NORTH NORFOLK REPEATER GROUP" Those at the meeting were G6JVF now (G0FVF) G6YAE now (G0FVG) G3PYN peter G3HRK doug (G8KZP. sk) G4OKH G6YLR G6XWO G6VBT now(G4VDC & silient key)
At this meeting GB3NN was purchased from G4CTT for £30( Repeater) + £10 (for all the feeder cable in full) using funds raised at that meet. The RSGB was then informed of a site change & GB3NN was relocated to BUNKERS HILL EGMERE (AM05f) atop of R J SEAMAN`S grass drying factory. Keeper G8KZP.... Treasurer G4VDC (mac) Secretary G6XWO.
GB3NN 1984 ..... PYE PF460 + 2 cavity filters.. 4 STACKED J-POLES each for RX & TX located 90ft apart at 77mtr ASL & ERP 12 WATTS. On 1st jan 1986 G0FVF took over the job as Treasurer from Malcom G4VDC, the following years saw the repeater serviced in 1987 by G8GTZ
Followed in 1988 by new antenna system from Mark G4WVU & again in 1990 + repeater replaced with new PHILIPS 496 NIT(fig3) Including new logic, Designed & built by Mark (G4WVU) + 18ft long high gain RX colinear(fig1) & 6db TX olinear(fig2) 90ft apart giving much improved perfofmance. On 11-1-1991 a group meeting was called & GB3TN 24cms
ATV REPEATER already on air almost a year & owned by Mark G4WVU joined the NN RPTR GRP.
GB3NN was giving great coverage all along the North Norfolk coast & well inland. in 1999 new LDF450 cable run`s improved operation dramaticaly. Between 1999 & 2008 the only OFF AIR periods were due to......
No1 Collapse of 40ft grain silo holding RX ANTENNA SYSTEM.
No2 Burnt fuse holder due to dry joint...
No3 Recalibration of TX / RX Freq + 1750hz tone detector (this work carried out by ANDY G8VLL)
